To the Editor:
When Terry Hayes declared her intention to run as an Independent for governor, I was very pleased to lend my support to her campaign. I have known Terry since I ran for the state legislature in 2010. At that time, she was one of my mentors. Her strength, generosity and sense of fairness were the things that drew me to her then, and I know that she would put those qualities to good use for the state.
Throughout her political career, Terry has been unique in her ability to build consensus and gain bipartisan respect. Her focus has always been upon the best outcome for the state, regardless of political labels or loyalties. On several occasions, I watched as she stood firm in her convictions even as party leaders castigated her for it.
On a personal note, I lost that election I referred to earlier. The next morning, of all the party leaders and state legislators I met during my campaign, Terry was the only one who called to offer empathy and support. She wasn’t concerned about what I could or could not do for her in the political future. She simply wanted to let me know she hadn’t forgotten me and that she cared. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of my vote, because I know that level of caring extends to everyone she represents.
I hope you will join me in casting your vote for Terry Hayes for Governor.
